How UK and US Clothing Sizes Differ
For men's clothing, UK and US sizes are identical — both use chest measurements in inches. The difference is entirely in women's clothing: subtract 4 from a UK women's size to get the US equivalent (UK 12 = US 8).
This offset has been consistent for decades. UK sizing is generally considered more standardized than US sizing, where vanity sizing has caused sizes to shift over time.
When shopping from UK brands online, the size chart is your best friend. Even with the subtract-4 rule, individual brands may fit differently depending on their target market and fit model.
