How to Measure Yourself for Clothing

Accurate body measurements take 5 minutes and ensure a better fit across every brand. Here's how to measure each key area.

1

Measure your chest or bust

Wrap a soft measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level and snug but not tight. For women, wear a non-padded bra. Breathe normally — don't puff your chest out.

Quick test: You should be able to fit one finger between the tape and your body.

2

Measure your waist

Find your natural waistline — the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button. Wrap the tape around, keeping it level. Don't suck in or push out.

Quick test: Bend to the side — the crease that forms is your natural waist.

3

Measure your hips

Stand with your feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks. The tape should be parallel to the floor.

Quick test: Look in a mirror from the side to make sure the tape is level, not angled.

4

Measure your inseam

Measure from your crotch to the bottom of your ankle bone. It's easiest to measure a pair of well-fitting pants: lay them flat and measure from the crotch seam to the hem.

Quick test: If measuring on your body, stand straight and have someone else take the measurement.

5

Record everything in centimeters

Most international size charts use centimeters. If you measured in inches, multiply by 2.54. Write down all four measurements (chest, waist, hips, inseam) — you'll need them for comparing against brand size charts.

Quick test: Double-check by measuring twice. Measurements should match within 1cm.
