How Should a Bra Fit? The 5-Point Checklist
A well-fitting bra should feel comfortable all day. Use this checklist to evaluate your fit.
The band sits level and snug
The band should be parallel to the floor all the way around your body. You should be able to fit two fingers under it, but not a fist. The band provides 80% of your support — not the straps.
Quick test: Run your finger along the back of the band. It should sit at the same height as the front, with no riding up.
Cups are smooth with no gaps or spillage
The cups should fully contain your breast tissue with no bulging at the top or sides, and no wrinkling or empty space. The top edge of the cup should lie flat against your skin.
Quick test: Look in a mirror from the front and side. Smooth fabric with no puckering or overflow means a good fit.
The center gore tacks flat
The center piece of fabric or wire between the cups should sit flat against your sternum. If it lifts away, the cups are too small to contain your breast tissue.
Quick test: Press gently on the center gore. It should already be touching your chest without being pushed.
Straps stay in place without digging
Straps should stay on your shoulders without slipping off or digging in. You should be able to comfortably slide a finger under each strap.
Quick test: Shrug your shoulders and move normally. Straps should stay put without leaving red marks.
The underwire follows your natural crease
For underwire bras, the wire should sit in the fold where your breast meets your ribcage. It should never press against breast tissue or poke your underarms.
Quick test: Run your finger along the underwire. It should trace the edge of your breast root, not cut across tissue.
The Scoop and Swoop Test
Before evaluating fit, make sure your bra is positioned correctly. Lean forward slightly, place your breasts fully into the cups, then stand up and use your hand to gently scoop any tissue from the sides into the cup.
Many women skip this step and end up with breast tissue sitting outside the cup. This makes a correctly sized bra look like it doesn't fit. After the scoop and swoop, re-check the 5 points above.
